Today we mark the crucifixion of Jesus, commonly known as “Good Friday.” So as the day passed today, I’ve been thinking. What if Jesus hadn’t given Himself up for us and died on the cross?
My whole life is built on the foundation of grace that Jesus forged throughout His ministry and most powerfully on the cross. Without that grace, I would forever torture myself over my sins, trying to be good enough and never quite making it. I would have long ago fallen into bitterness and despair that anything could truly be good in this world. I would have failed in my efforts to forgive others, or maybe never even tried, without the far greater example of how Jesus forgave me.
By His act of selfless and sacrificial love, Jesus offered, in fact, still offers, hope and redemption. While I grieve as I remember what happened to Him and what He did, I also gratefully receive the gift.
May God bless you today and always. It is finished.
